A mom in Georgia recently posted a video on TikTok warning other parents that kids can get baked if they sniff a popular spice in the kitchen.

The widely shared video claims that kids are “nutmeg intoxicated,” a dangerous condition brought on by the nutmeg spice, which can be used to flavor both savory and sweet dishes. Continue reading to learn more about this mind-altering substance that can be harmful or even fatal if consumed in excess. A mother who goes by the handle Lakeview Living on TikTok uploaded a video on March 11; it has now gone viral. In it, she discusses the emerging phenomenon of “sniffing” with parents and teenagers.

The video has received nearly 600,000 views, with the comment “Really guys?! NUTMEG? Where do they get the ideas for these things?

“Today, I was talking with one of my teacher friends and she was like, ‘Girl, trying to stay one step ahead of these kids is exhausting,'” the mother writes in the now-viral post.

She says that during a “backpack check,” teachers found that some students were carrying small bottles of nutmeg. She calls it “flipping wild.”

The students explained that the spice was for “culinary class” so they wouldn’t get in trouble. However, the culinary teacher questioned, “What are you talking about?,” when the teacher informed her about the pumpkin pie spice. Nutmeg is not being used in any of our recipes. The startled mother went on to inform them that the “resource officer” at the school had heard what they had to say and had removed the nutty, delicious stuff before suspending the sly children.

“Y’all can’t get your homework done, but you can figure out how to get high off of nutmeg?” the mother scolds the smart but lazy teens. “Make it make sense.”

The magazine Medical News Today says that when two teaspoons of it are eaten, it gives people a “‘high’ similar to that of some hallucinogenic drugs. The name for this is nutmeg intoxication.”

Nutmeg contains a molecule called myristicin. The body converts it into the hallucinogenic substance methylenedioxyamphetamine (MMDA) when consumed.

“People with nutmeg intoxication experience a variety of symptoms, including drowsiness and hallucinations.”

Nutmeg poisoning is also dangerous and could be fatal.

    ‘Anarchist Cookbook’

Many of the woman’s fans who were also parents were worried about spice sniffing.

This has existed for a long time. It contains a psychotropic ingredient, but not in a good way. One TikToker writes, “You get the worst hangover of your life for a 10-minute high.” As she compliments educators for monitoring her children and the entire generation that follows Gen Z, a mother continues, “As a mom of [four] Gen Alpha…I have the utmost gratitude for my instructors’ patience with my children. Because no way.

Some people agree that sniffing nutmeg isn’t new. One person writes, “Class of 2002 it was so popular in my school they had to do a PSA about how toxic nutmeg can be if you use too much.”

“Nutmeg was popular when I was like 12″ says a second “Someone done talked to Gen X!”

“Gen X’er here – The Anarchist Cookbook of course,” a third jokes.

One commenter shares her story of treating a young patient at the hospital for nutmeg toxicity years ago. The patient had nutmeg poisoning. I had never heard of it before. began in prisons. However, they have access to the internet, so I’m sure that’s how they found out.

People have been using nutmeg as a drug for a long time, long before prisoners learned that it could make them hallucinate.

“Nutmeg seeds were used in medicines as an aphrodisiac, abortifacient, and anti-flatulent, a narcotic, and as a means to induce [menstruation],” according to the Encyclopedia of Toxicology.

Hemorrhoids, persistent vomiting, rheumatism, cholera, psychosis, stomach pains, nausea, and anxiety are among the modern “uses of nutmeg seeds.” Additionally, nutmeg seed oil possesses analgesic, antirheumatic, and antimicrobial qualities.

    ‘Flippin’ teenagers’

Some kids back at school had an extra long March Break.

“You know why they’re all suspended?” asks the mother. “Because these flippin’ teenagers have figured out you can use nutmeg to get high.”

“Is nothing sacred anymore?” she asks
